Autos for Animals FAQs

Q: What can I donate?
A: We accept most vehicles and vessels including but not limited to cars, trucks, trailers, boats and RVs. WHS works with a company that evaluates each vehicle donation situation to determine whether the vehicle can be accepted as a donation.

Q: Is my vehicle donation tax deductible?

A: Yes. The Wisconsin Humane Society is classified with the IRS as non-profit charitable organization. Donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Individual tax situations vary, so please check with a tax professional to determine what, if any tax benefit you may receive.

Q: How can I donate my vehicle?

A: Please call the WHS Development Department at (414) 431-6162.
It is best if you have the title to the vehicle, but if you do not have it, please call anyway. It is possible that other arrangements may be made.

Q: My car hasn't run in years. Can I still donate it?

A: Yes, we are able to accept most vehicles running or not (exceptions include older vehicles whose value would not offset the cost of towing). To find out if we can accept your vehicle, please call the WHS Development Department at (414) 431-6162.

Q: Can you pick up vehicles in all 50 states?

A: Yes, we are able to pick up accepted vehicles in the continental U.S. and Hawaii.

Q: How is the value of my car determined?
A: The IRS allows the donor to deduct Fair Market Value, but they limit the deduction to $500. The only way to claim a deduction greater than $500, is if we are able to resell the vehicle for more than $500. In this case, the deduction amount is based on the gross sale of the vehicle at auction. The Kelly Blue Book and the NADA Guides may be used as helpful references in determining the Fair Market Value of your vehicle. We suggest you review IRS Publication 526 which sets forth the manner in which the IRS requires you to determine the value of your donated property.

Q: How will the car be picked up?
A: WHS will arrange to have your vehicle towed away by a professionally licensed, bonded and insured towing company.

Q: How long will it take to pick up my car?
A: You will be contacted within three or four business days at the most. If you need your car picked up sooner, please let us know as we may be able to make those arrangements as well.

Q: How can I contact you to schedule a pick up?
A: Please call our Development Department at (414) 431-6162 to schedule a pick-up or to find out more information.
