Adoptions Soar at Racine Campus

Donations sought as organization expands services

Racine, Wis – Officials at the Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) report that operations are running successfully in the first two months since the organization acquired the former Countryside Humane Society (CHS) in Racine.

We are unbelievably grateful to the community for their overwhelming support of the WHS Racine Campus,” said Alison Kleibor, the Racine Campus director. “We have received dozens of emails, letters and calls welcoming us to the community, and expressing support for the transition. And we’re so proud of our early success.”

New resources brought to the Racine shelter have already resulted in these accomplishments:

  • The Wisconsin Humane Society Racine Campus has found homes for 171 animals in just the first two months of operation. In 2012, records indicate that there were 88 adoptions during the same time period at CHS.
  • The organization has provided low-cost vaccines to 298 animals at four public vaccine clinics since January 1, and launched a spay/neuter assistance program (SNAP), which has sterilized 76 animals from low-income families.
  • The “Racine available dogs” website page got 70,803 page views in January, and 85,477 page views in February.
  • Donations received from January 1 through February 28 totaled $45,576. Last year, $24,000 in donations were received by CHS during the calendar year.

“We still need a lot of help,” expressed Angela Speed, the director of community relations and development. “We have made a promise to the community that adoptable animals will stay in adoption until they find a home – we will not euthanize for space or time – and it takes more supplies, more staff and certainly more dog and cat treats to do that.”

Although donations have already surpassed what was raised in all of 2012 at CHS, WHS’s annual fundraising goal for the Racine Campus is $300,000; with such an aggressive fundraising goal, there is a still a long way to go.

“I cannot overemphasize the significance and impact every gift makes,” Speed said. “We launched a campaign in January to help with the medical expenses of a dog named Jerome who needed amputation surgery, and we raised $15,000! We were so fortunate to receive a few large gifts for Jerome, yet the majority of those donations were in the $20 to $75 range.”
