MEDIA ADVISORY ____________________________________

MILWAUKEE — Avian Odyssey will be taking flight across the United States throughout May 2007 with an opportunity for everyone to become “birders,” have fun, and support the lifesaving work at the Wisconsin Humane Society’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.

WHS’ 1st Annual Avian Odyssey invites novice and expert birders to choose one day in May and count the number of bird species they see in a 24-hour period. Participants collect donations from family, friends and coworkers in return for their marathon birding effort.

“We’re hoping to encourage people to get outdoors and have fun counting all of the birds they see,” said Scott Diehl, Wildlife Manager with the WHS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. “At the same time, they’ll be helping us create an awareness of, and support for the work we do here at WHS, helping wild animals.”

The Wisconsin Humane Society's Wildlife Rehabilitation Center receives and cares for more than 5,000 injured, sick and orphaned wild animals of over 145 different species every year. The Center’s goal is to rehabilitate these creatures and return them again to the wild.

The Wisconsin Humane Society’s Wings Watch web page provides more information about the event, including online registration, prize information and rules. Visit the newly launched site at http://savinglives.wihumane.org/ AvianOdyssey, or call (414) 431-6117.
