The
Lily Family can be a danger to your animal family
MILWAUKEE
– As Easter approaches, many of us purchase
Easter Lilies to spruce up the home. The Wisconsin
Humane Society wants to warn all cat owners about
the toxic dangers that linger in the Lily plant.
If your cat ingests these toxic plant materials,
the cat may develop kidney failure in approximately
36-72 hours. Typical signs of ingestion are vomiting,
sudden loss of appetite, increased urination, and
depression.
Other dangerous Lily Plants may include:
• Tiger lilies
• Japanese showy lilies
• Stargazer Lily
• Various day lilies
According to Dr. Zeman with the Wisconsin Humane
Society, “It is possible for your cat to become
very sick from ingesting these lilies and prompt
treatment is important for your cat’s survival.”
WHS recommends that cat owners remove lilies from
their cat's access and consider purchasing safer
alternatives such as Easter orchids, Easter cactus,
Easter daisies or violets.
If you feel your cat has been exposed to the toxic
plant, immediately bring your cat to your veterinarian
for the proper treatment.
