Winn
and Dixie Shop for a New Home
MILWAUKEE
– Two terrified dogs were found huddled
together under a building nearly demolished by Hurricane
Katrina in New Orleans . After being rescued, both
dogs received lots of tender loving care and kisses;
but one received a lot more than just love.
The dogs were
taken to a staging shelter in New Orleans located
in a former Winn Dixie grocery store where they
got their names; Dixie , an Akita Shepherd mix and
Winn, a Basenji mix. But, Dixie was really sick.
She was diagnosed with cancer and actually had surgery
and one chemotherapy treatment while in New Orleans
. After all that expert care she had lots of friends,
but no guardian or home. Chuck Meyer, a hurricane
relief volunteer from Wisconsin took a chance on
Winn and Dixie and brought them back to Wisconsin
and to the Wisconsin Humane Society to see if they
could get a second chance.
After a comprehensive
medical evaluation by a WHS veterinarian, it was
determined Dixie needed several more rounds of treatment.
Although it was going to be expensive, staff at
the Wisconsin Humane Society had quickly made friends
with the two buddies and arranged for Dixie to receive
the necessary treatment and the best possible care.
And, it worked. Thanks to the special treatment
Dixie received from WHS veterinary staff coupled
with a compassionate foster parent, she is now ready
for permanent placement.
The gentle Dixie
is now available for adoption, but she can't bear
to be separated from her friend and consoler, Winn.
Anyone who meets them will quickly see that they
were made for each other.
