Orphaned Bird Care Volunteer
(seasonal position)
This is a seasonal position that coincides with the baby bird season; late May through early September. We ask all of our Orphaned Bird Care Volunteers for at least a 12-week commitment to the program. This is a weekly commitment. Due to the seasonal-nature of this position, if you will need more than 3 weeks off during your volunteering commitment, we may not be able to accommodate you into the OBC schedule.
Four different shifts are available between 8:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., seven days a week. Volunteers are needed to help feed orphaned wild birds in our Nursery, care for orphaned ducklings, and assist interns in cleaning the Nursery, washing dishes and folding laundry. Other responsibilities include preparing food and cleaning cages. No previous animal handling experience is necessary; however, you must be comfortable being in the presence of birds.
The minimum age requirement for this program is 13 years old. Volunteers are positive, up-beat and mature, able to work independently, and take written and verbal directions. No previous animal handling experience is necessary. If you are under the age of 18, you will need to submit a letter of recommendation with your application to be accepted into the program. At times, this can be a physically demanding position. OBC volunteers must be able to stand for at least 3 hours, bend, lift, stoop, twist, crawl, and be able to lift 30 pounds.
