WHS statement regarding Humane Society of the United States
Today, the CEO of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Wayne Pacelle, resigned following sexual misconduct allegations. After this news, we have an important reminder for our community. The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is not an affiliate or chapter of any national organization, including the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). In fact, there is no national umbrella organization in animal sheltering. WHS, like every local and regional animal shelter, is a local, independent non-profit organization. We operate shelters in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Brown and Door Counties, as well as a Spay/Neuter Clinic in West Allis. WHS relies on the generosity of our community to fund lifesaving programs, and we do not receive general government funding.
At WHS, we are committed to our values of compassion, respect, integrity and professionalism. Our workplace culture does not tolerate harassment or disrespect of employees, volunteers, clients, donors, or the public. Compassion and respect are the foundation of helping both the animals in our care and the people we serve, and behavior contrary to our values is not tolerated.
