EBI Training

Euthanasia by Injection Training Program

The Euthanasia by Injection Training Program offered by the Wisconsin Humane Society provides individuals with the information, skills, and experience to become proficient and compassionate euthanasia technicians. Euthanasia by injection is a critical skillset of those working in veterinary medicine, whether in private practice or shelter medicine. It is the responsibility of the participant to use this training to gain and maintain the confidence, compassion, and technical skills that constitute competency. 


About the Course

The course offered by WHS consists of two parts, both of which must be completed to fulfill the State of Wisconsin Controlled Substances Board requirements. 

Part I. Lecture

Successful completion of a virtual training course offered by the University of Florida or Midwest Animal Shelter Training. Participants will receive a certificate of completion that both verifies attendance and successful completion of the examination with a score of 75% or above. 

Course Outline

The course will include lectures, discussions, activities, and a final exam. 

A certificate of completion will be awarded after completion of the examination. Attendance at all sessions and units is mandatory.  Responses to survey questions during the lecture will be used to monitor attendance.  Attendees must respond to all survey questions for attendance credit.

  • The Euthanasia Area 
  • Animal Handling and Restraint 
  • Definitions 
  • Administering Pre-Euthanasia Medications (Pre-medications:  oral and injectable)
  • Understanding How it Works - Sodium Pentobarbital
  • Sodium Pentobarbital:  Injection Routes
  • Verification of Death
  • Body Disposal
  • Accidental Exposure Hazard - Euthanasia Drugs
  • Compassion Fatigue/Euthanasia-related Stress 
  • Laws-Federal and State Requirements for Controlled Substances
  • Virtual Demonstrations
  • Review for Examination
  • Examination 

Part II. Practical Training

Hands on training is essential to ensure the practical proficiency. A signature on the attestation is required of the euthanasia technician and a licensed veterinarian who can verify the proficiency of the euthanasia technician. 

The practical training at your facility must cover the following topics:

  • Syringe and needle handling including subcutaneous, intramuscular and intravenous injection
  • Identification of controlled substances
  • Animal handling and restraint with emphasis on low stress handling
  • Injection site anatomy:SC, IM, IV and IC
  • Verification of death
  • Body disposal
  • Controlled substance recordkeeping

Learning Outcomes

Successful participants of this training will be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of humane euthanasia methods for animals.
  • Understand how pre-euthanasia and euthanasia drugs work.
  • Calculate appropriate drug dosages for each animal.
  • Utilize humane animal restraint techniques and safety procedures.
  • Use appropriate sites and methods of drug administration.
  • Interpret signs to verify death in an animal.
  • Identify and comply with appropriate state regulations regarding humane euthanasia and associated drugs.
  • Recognize and manage euthanasia-related stress, compassion stress and compassion fatigue.

The Wisconsin Humane Society will periodically host Midwest Animal Shelter Training as they provide an online course designed to fulfill the requirements of Part I of this training program.
