Homeless dog awaits orthopedic surgery – and a new home

Wisconsin Humane Society seeks funds to help special dog “Lady” get surgery

MILWAUKEE — Lady is such a darling. She's so sweet so that the Wisconsin Humane Society featured her on Facebook and created a YouTube video of her. After a few weeks in their adoption program, though, Lady began to limp. It was a new sign that there was something seriously wrong with her.

At only 2 years old, Lady has a knee problem in both legs: luxating patellas, which is a condition where the kneecaps pop out of place. Without surgery, her knees will deteriorate rapidly and cause her a lifetime of pain. It is a debilitating condition, but one that can be treated.

The staff at the Wisconsin Veterinary Referral Center (WVRC) in Waukesha learned about Lady’s condition, and graciously offered to donate a large portion of the surgery. WHS is trying to raise $2,700 to cover the rest of Lady’s medical costs.

“We’re so grateful to our friends at WVRC for stepping up to help,” said Angela Speed, director of communications at WHS. “We couldn't save dogs like Lady without the support of the community, and we're so thankful for any amount that anyone else can contribute to her surgery - it all truly makes a huge difference.”

Due to the nature of the surgery and recovery time, WHS is looking for an adoptive family immediately; recovery often goes best while an animal is in a home environment. The new family will go home with a certificate for the surgery at WVRC, in addition to other supportive resources. If you are interested in adopting, check out Lady's profile at wihumane.org.

A special fundraising effort in Lady’s honor has been posted on the humane society’s website at http://www.wihumane.org/. Contributions can also be made by calling 414-431-6270 or mailing them to: Wisconsin Humane Society “For Lady,” 4500 W. Wisconsin Ave. Milwaukee, WI 53208. All donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
